Tourism Scholarships

Tourism is a Career…Over 50,000 Nova Scotians work in the Tourism Sector. The Canadian Tourism Industry offers a variety of rewarding careers. Tourism employment growth results in tremendous opportunity for Canadians with the appropriate skills, knowledge and attitude.

The 2.1 million Canadians working in the Tourism Sector have many faces…people working in accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and entertainment, transportation and travel services.

The Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council offers Tourism Scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing post secondary education in tourism.

The Council also offers a scholarship for Tourism Professionals working in the Industry who are interested in pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their career. For more information, please contact NSTHRC

NEW! Tourism Leadership Scholarship

To help support the next generation of tourism leaders, TIANS, in partnership with Cape Breton University, is offering a new scholarship opportunity for tourism and hospitality professionals pursuing the Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management (BHTM) degree at Cape Breton University. With up to $30,000 in scholarships available for the 2026–2027 academic year, this funding is designed to reduce financial barriers, support career growth, and help experienced tourism professionals build the skills and confidence to lead in a changing industry.

What is Required?

  • A statement outlining your career goals, leadership aspirations and how the BHTM program will support your growth and the future of Nova Scotia’s tourism industry
  • A letter of recommendation from a current or recent employer, supervisor, industry leader, community organization or tourism-related association

How to Apply

  • To submit your application, please email  awards@cbu.ca
  • Applications must include the required statement and letter of recommendation
  • Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee from CBU and TIANS

This is a pilot initiative for the 2026–2027 academic year. CBU and TIANS will assess participation, impact and alignment with workforce development objectives. Pilot outcomes will be reviewed for continuation, expansion or modification. 

 

 

BUILDING UP – Tourism Employer Investment Fund Scholarship Opportunity

The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) and the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council (NSTHRC) are pleased to announce a new addition to their scholarship program, with the launch of the Tourism Employer Investment Fund.
This support fund will accept applications from a business owner or senior employee of the company, as they look to enhance their skills and knowledge through a wide variety of training and learning opportunities, or pursue business expansion opportunities.
As we encourage employers to invest in their staff, it is equally important that we support employers themselves – to help build essential skills to operate in a dynamic and innovative global marketplace.
Whether a course, conference, accreditations or growing your business – we want to support building the leadership of the Nova Scotia Tourism Industry. Funding support is up to $2500 per applicant.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
In order to be eligible for the Tourism Employer Investment Fund applicants must be:
– Pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their skills or career path within the tourism industry, or
– Employed in a Senior Position or an Owner in the Nova Scotia Tourism Industry, or
– Pursuing Business Expansion Opportunities

This scholarship is awarded annually. There are two award categories: GOLD – $1,250.00 and SILVER – $750.00. Both awards are renewable for one additional year, for $750.00 and $250.00 respectively. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.  Application Deadline:  August 31

CRITERIA

  1. Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing a recognized Tourism post-secondary program.
  2. Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.
  3. Applications will include:
    • Official school transcript
    • Essay: This essay will be 300-500 words in length entitled, “Why I’ve Chosen a Career in Tourism”
    • 2 References

NSTHRC Culinary Scholarship

With the tremendous growth in the Tourism Sector, cooking professionals are in great demand. To assist in the growth of culinary talent in Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council are offering a Scholarship for high school graduates interested in pursuing post secondary education within the culinary trade. This Scholarship is presented annually in the amount of $1000 and is renewable for one additional year in the amount of $500. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 /Tourism 12 graduates and Serve it Up participants.    

CRITERIA

  1. Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing post-secondary education in a recognized culinary program.
  2. Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.
  3. Applications should include:
    • A 500 word essay describing why the applicant has chosen to pursue a career in the culinary trade
    • Resume
    • Official school transcript
    • 2 references; one academic and one extra curricular/professional

NSTHRC

To support the investment in human resource development in the Tourism Industry, NSTHRC is proud to award two scholarships for Tourism professionals seeking to upgrade their skills in their designated field.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
In order to be eligible for the Judith B. Cabrita Tourism Professional Scholarships, applicants must be:

  • Pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their skills or career path within the tourism industry OR pursuing the National emerit Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
  • Employed in the Nova Scotia tourism industry for a minimum of one year.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applicants are to submit the following items:

  • Letter of Introduction telling us about yourself and the professional development opportunity you are interested in pursuing – either emerit National Certification OR professional development (i.e. conference, training, or educational program).  The letter should incorporate how the opportunity will enhance job knowledge and improve career goals.
  • Please include a letter of support from your employer and a current resume.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and are reviewed by the NSTHRC Scholarship Committee on an individual basis.
